Some of my warmest childhood memories come from standing in the kitchen beside my Mom as she made her famous Sweet Potato Pie. I can still see that worn little recipe card, sitting on the counter, edges curling and smudged with love. I was probably no older than six or seven, perched on a stool, calling out the ingredients like it was the most important job in the world.
“Two cups of sweet potatoes… one stick of butter…”
Mom would smile, nodding along, mixing with care and humming softly to herself.
Year after year, that same card came out around the holidays. And year after year, it collected new stains — a little vanilla smudge here, a dusting of flour there — each one a tiny timestamp of the moments we shared.
Now that she’s gone, that recipe card is one of my most treasured keepsakes. It holds more than just instructions — it holds her handwriting, her heart, and all the love that went into every pie she made.
To keep those memories close, I had Recipe Towel Gifts create a custom handwritten recipe towel featuring Mom’s sweet potato pie recipe. It now hangs in my kitchen, a daily reminder of her warmth and the beautiful bond we shared over food and family. Every time I see it, I smile — because a simple towel has turned into something so much more: a lasting piece of our story.
